The history of TOUGYOKU workshop parallels that of the town of Iwatsuki. Since the Edo period, the town of Iwatsuki has flourished as a post town/ castle town, and has long been blessed with the paulownia wood and high quality water, ideal for dollmaking. At present, Iwatsuki takes great pride in its status as Japan’s largest producer of traditional dolls.

TOUGYOKU’s original founder, Ryuuken Totsuka, was a doctor at the palace of the lord of Iwatsuki, Kaei Nenkan, Totsuka’s hobby was dollmaking, and he often made fine dolls, in addition to his work as a doctor. When he gave one of his dolls to the lord of Iwatsuki as a gift, he was highly praised, and granted the moniker, “TOUGYOKU” meaning King of the East. Thus, the distinguished history of the TOUGYOKU name has been passed down through six generations, and remains active to this day.

The origin of the dolls of Iwatsuki
Iwatsuki was a castle town at the time that the "Nikkoutoushouguu" was being constructed, and so it became a post town along the Nikko-onari higeway. There are many differing stories about how the dolls of Iwatsuki came to be, and one of the most popular is as follows: About300 years ago, Eshin, a buddhist image sculptor from Kyoto, fell ill while passing therough Iwatsuki. Through the care of the doctors in Iwatsuki he recovered, but the ordeal left his body weak, and he was forced to stay in Iwatsuki and make is his home. At that time, he devised a method of making dolls out of thee paulownia wood powder native to the area. This method was passed along, and is still employed today when making dolls. It is also said that the doctor who cared for Eshin was an ancestor of TOUGYOKU's fouder, Ryuuken Totsuka.
